What is Walkabout?

Walkabout is a game of spiritual awakening and nightmares, it is set in a post apocalyptic world where the once legendary beings of the Dreaming stepped back into the world because humans had proven themselves unworthy to retain custodianship of the planet. After generations of horror and bloodshed, things have begun to stabilise and settlements have started to reform. However the spirits still linger, and the dark questions of the past need to be answered.

The world of Walkabout is a place where stories and memories have power. A world where the chance to make or break the future can be found in relationships to each other, to the land, and to the stories of the world's communities. Everything is interlinked, sometimes in ways that are obvious, and sometimes in ways that are only revealed later.

What is the game about?

Walkabout tells the stories of the Wayfarers, heroes who walk between the waking world and the dreaming, helping solve the problems of the communities they encounter. It is a violent and dangerous world, but violence is not the answer to every question and usually only makes things worse.

The stories of Walkabout are about conflicts between people, conflicts between communities, and the conflict between beliefs made manifest in a world that has had enough. It forces players to make choices about whether the best path is to protect traditions of the past, or progress toward something new. This is a setting with no easy answers, where past choices often have ramifications that need to be dealth with now, and current choices may come back to haunt the characters later.

What do the characters do?

The majority of people in this world are survivors, they may live in small towns, scavenged enclaves on the edges of nuclear irradiated wastelands (which were once great cities), in convoys travelling the desolate highways, or even in hidden bunkers secluded from the horrors of the surface world. The characters come from one of these communities, but have chosen to leave their settlements behind in service to the spirits trying to restore balance to the world, and set things right.

The characters belong to an order called the Wayfarers, and have pledged their loyalty to spirits who want to see the issues of the world resolved. They start with a magical tattoo or brand that shows this allegiance in a physical way (and grants them the ability to peer into the spirit realm).

Over the course of their stories and adventures they may pledge loyalty further, to increase their standing among the Wayfarers or gain powers from other spirits.

To the other survivors in the world, the characters are a force to be reckoned with. They are untrusted by authority figures in the settlements they encounter, because every time they show up, a disruption to the status quo is inevitable. To the downtrodden and the lost, they are folk heroes and legends briging hope ad a chance to make a better world. To the Wayfarers, their role is a calling, and chance to change the world for the better.
